Reflection
Before reading the rest of the page, guess what the biggest reason for non-compliance is and include your answer in the comment section.
Key Idea:
Rather than wasting time on the inefficient, vague and unclear commands that negatively define behavior, effective teachers focus on giving directions to students in a way that provides clear, useful and positive guidance.
Directions should be:
Specific
Tell students exactly what you want them to do. Remember to stay away from saying what not to do. “Put your pencil on your desk and track the speaker.” Not “Pay attention” or “Don’t fool around or get distracted” Concrete
Give commands that students cannot misunderstand. Don’t create gray area. “Put your feet under your desk” Not “Stop fooling around"Sequential
Give the step by step instructions of what you want. Again, “pay attention” will not suffice. Use “Put your feet under your desk, put your pencil down and track the speaker.” Observable
Don’t give commands you can’t observe. Doing so provides students with an opportunity to protest. If the directions are “pay attention,” the student can say “I was.” If the directions are “put your feet under your desk” and they are not, it wouldn’t make much sense for the student to say they are.
I can't decide between two reasons: boredom and not knowing what the expectations are.
ReplyDeleteNot knowing what is expected of them
ReplyDeleteNot knowing what is expected of them and having unclear instructions(directions)
ReplyDeleteI think the most common reason for noncompliance would be unclear expectations.
ReplyDeleteMy guess for the biggest reason for non-compliance is students thinking it is an option to not comply and getting away with it.
ReplyDeleteNot having set standards of what is expected behavior
ReplyDeleteI think it is unclear instructions.
ReplyDeleteStudent wants attention
ReplyDeleteThe student thinks it is OK to not listen or be involved in the class - so class expectations or lack of high standards.
ReplyDeleteIt might be lack of enforcing the rules of compliance on the teacher’s part
ReplyDeleteThe biggest reason for non-compliance is probably that the students are not aware of the expectations placed on them and why there are expectations. Students need to know why before they will try.
ReplyDeleteAllowing them to get out of hand?
ReplyDeleteun-clear expectations, or disbelief in teachers authority or consequences
ReplyDeletewhat the heck am I suppose to be doing?
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest factor for non-compliance is boredom.
ReplyDeleteNot understanding the task at hand or what the expectations are.
ReplyDeleteNot having clear expectations or directions.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that they do not understand the task, or what is expected of them.
